Background of the Study

In the digital age, social media has become an integral part of adolescents’ lives, offering platforms for social interaction, information sharing, and self-expression. However, the overuse or addiction to social media has raised concerns about its impact on mental health. In Kaduna State, the increasing popularity of platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter among adolescents has led to concerns about negative outcomes such as anxiety, depression, and social isolation (Abubakar & Suleiman, 2025).

Social media addiction can exacerbate existing mental health issues or contribute to the development of new problems, including low self-esteem, poor body image, and difficulty managing offline relationships. While some studies have highlighted the potential benefits of social media, such as social connection and emotional support, the adverse mental health effects of excessive use are becoming increasingly evident. This study seeks to evaluate the effects of social media addiction on adolescent mental health in Kaduna State.

Statement of the Problem

Adolescents in Kaduna State, like their peers globally, are spending increasing amounts of time on social media platforms. This trend has raised alarms about the potential psychological impact, particularly the risk of addiction, which can lead to issues like sleep disturbances, heightened anxiety, and depression. Despite the growing concern, limited research has been conducted to evaluate the specific effects of social media addiction on adolescent mental health in the region. This study aims to explore this issue, providing insights into the mental health consequences and suggesting preventive strategies.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the extent of social media addiction among adolescents in Kaduna State.
  2. To evaluate the impact of social media addiction on the mental health of adolescents in Kaduna State.
  3. To recommend strategies for managing social media use and promoting positive mental health among adolescents.

Research Questions

  1. What is the extent of social media addiction among adolescents in Kaduna State?
  2. How does social media addiction affect the mental health of adolescents in Kaduna State?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to mitigate the negative effects of social media addiction on adolescent mental health?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Adolescents in Kaduna State experience high levels of social media addiction.
  2. Social media addiction has a significant negative impact on the mental health of adolescents in Kaduna State.
  3. Implementing strategies to reduce social media addiction will improve adolescent mental health outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on adolescents aged 12-19 years in Kaduna State, assessing their social media use and mental health outcomes. Limitations include potential biases in self-reporting social media usage and mental health status, as well as the difficulty in measuring addiction levels accurately across different social media platforms.

Definitions of Terms
